SUNDSVALL, Sweden--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 1, 1998--SCA will certify its two
million
hectares of forest land according to FSC, Forest Stewardship Council.

FSC is an international organizational working for the development of
responsible forest
management worldwide.

For more than a year we have worked with the development of our environmental
management
and the monitoring of our environmental performance, says Anders Hildeman,
responsible
for environmental communication within SCA Forest and Timber. This work has
covered
nature conservation on our forest land, including the implementation of the FSC
standard
in our forest management, but also timber trans-port, regeneration and the
production of
tree seedlings and biofuels. We have been audited by the international
certification
company Det Norske Veritas and have recently received a certificate confirming
that we meet the demands of the standard ISO 14001.

In the context of this work we have put in substantial effort to ascertain that
our
forest management meets the requirements of the Swedish FSC Standard. The ISO
14001
certificate confirms that we operate accordingly and we are now taking the next
step,
applying for FSC certification of our forests. Forest Stewardship Council is an
association of companies and non-governmental organizations. It has developed
general
principles for responsible forest management. A Swedish working group with
representatives from forest companies, environmental organizations, the sami and
trade
unions, has applied these principles on Swedish conditions and has developed the
world's
first national FSC criteria. These criteria comprises measurable demands on
nature
conservation and on consideration for the sami indigenous population, among
other things.
