The Town of Vincent in Perth has voted unanimously to boycott any
company involved in the export of native forest woodchips.
Councillor Brian Greig says last night's vote to ban new direct
commercial dealings with native woodchip exporters reflects the views
of ratepayers.
Mr Greig, who becomes a Federal Democrats Senator in July, says all
existing commercial dealings will be honoured.
He says the principle of the boycott is more important than the
commercial ramifications of the ban.
"In joining this boycott, we're making it very clear to the companies
and to the State Government who no doubt has an eye on us and what
we're doing," Mr Greig said.
"And we're saying enough is enough, we only have 10 per cent of our
old growth forests left and we must save them and preserve them for
the future and not chop them down."
