A far north Queensland man has been jailed for a year for logging trees in a World Heritage-listed rainforest.

Thirty-one-year-old Brett Dempsey of Ravenshoe pleaded guilty in the Cairns Magistrates Court to destroying forest products in a World Heritage protected area.

The court heard 23 rainforest trees, some more than 100-years-old, were unlawfully felled on the Herberton Range in December last year.

It is the first time a person has been prosecuted under the Wet Tropics World Heritage Protection and Management Act.
