Project Learning Tree and SFI Join Forces to Expand Youth Environmental Educational Programs

The Sustainable Forestry Initiative Inc. (SFI) and the American Forest Foundation (AFF) announced today that SFI has become the new home of Project Learning Tree (PLT). PLT is an award-winning environmental education program that uses trees and forests as windows on the world to increase youth understanding of the environment and actions they can take to conserve it. PLT’s integration into SFI provides an opportunity for the program to expand its reach and impact. And SFI’s role as a sustainability leader will be bolstered by PLT’s expertise in education, an increasing focus in SFI’s community engagement work. PLT was previously housed at the American Forest Foundation.

SFI Fiber Sourcing Standard Recognized as a Verification Mechanism For PEFC Chain of Custody Certification

The Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) Fiber Sourcing Standard is now recognized by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) as a tool that meets PEFC requirements for the avoidance of controversial sources in the PEFC Chain of Custody standard. “PEFC is pleased to support initiatives of its members that are unique and innovative such as the SFI Fiber Sourcing Standard, which provides an effective mechanism to demonstrate compliance with PEFC Chain of Custody requirements concerning controversial sources at a global level, while promoting the responsible procurement of wood fibre for SFI manufacturing facilities across the USA and Canada,” said Ben Gunneberg, CEO and Secretary General of PEFC International, in a PEFC blog.

SMARTLAM is First US CLT Manufacturer to Earn SFI Chain-of-Custody Certification

The Sustainable Forestry Initiative Inc. (SFI) announced today that SmartLam, LLC, is the first U.S. manufacturer of cross-laminated timber (CLT) to be certified to the SFI 2015-2021 Chain-of-Custody Standard. SmartLam manufactures CLT for a variety of applications, including floor, roof and wall systems. SFI’s Chain-of-Custody Standard helps companies address the growing demand from governments, customers, and consumers for responsibly sourced forest products.

SFI Community Grants Feature Collaboration From 50 Different Groups Spanning North America

The Sustainable Forestry Initiative Inc. (SFI) announced 11 community grants today that will advance the quality of life in communities across North America. SFI is bringing together a diverse range of people from 50 organizations to support community engagement projects that put SFI at the intersection of sustainable forestry, responsible procurement and thriving communities. SFI engages local communities through a variety of initiatives including youth outreach, supporting Indigenous values, forest education programs, and green building projects for low-income families.

92 Secondary Wood Products Manufacturers Earn SFI Chain-Of-Custody Certification

Ninety-two secondary manufacturers of the Wood Products Manufacturers Association (WPMA) simultaneously earned certification to the SFI 2015-2021 Chain-of-Custody (COC) Standard, making this the largest single group to certify to the SFI COC Standard at once. Wood products sold as certified to the SFI COC Standard allow these hardwood organizations to be eligible for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) credits through the LEED Alternative Compliance Path.

Black Butte Ranch Wins SFI Wood Works! Award

Using wood in innovative and beautiful ways to bring new life to the Lakeside at Black Butte Ranch — an iconic Oregon resort community near Sisters, Oregon — has earned Portland-based architects Hacker an award from the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). The SFI Certified Wood Award is part of the North American Wood Design and Building Awards program. Hacker was presented with the award at the Wood WORKS! BC Wood Design Awards in Vancouver on March 6.

SFI Conservation Grants Feature Collaboration From 37 Different Groups Spanning North America

The Sustainable Forestry Initiative Inc. (SFI) announced five conservation grants today. SFI is bringing together a diverse range of people from 37 organizations to support research that directly influences future forests. This year’s grants focus on the connection between sustainable supply chains and natural resource issues we all care about — like carbon storage, wildlife habitat, species at risk and forests with exceptional conservation value. These organizations include leading conservation groups like NatureServe, GreenBlue, Ducks Unlimited Canada, Manomet, the American Bird Conservancy and the Florida Natural Areas Inventory. They are collaborating with government officials from Georgia, Saskatchewan and the Canadian Forest Service, SFI Program Participants, the Forest Products Association of Canada as well as the University of Alberta, UBC and Université Laval.

Ottawa 2017 partners with Sustainable Forestry Initiative for Red Bull Crashed Ice

The Ottawa 2017 Bureau and Mayor Jim Watson, in collaboration with lead partner CIBC, are pleased to welcome Sustainable Forestry Initiative Inc. (SFI) as a partner for Canada’s 150th birthday celebrations in the nation’s capital.  A sustainability leader dedicated to the future of our forests, SFI promotes the responsible procurement of forest products. The organization has arranged for the donation of responsibly sourced forest products to build the Red Bull Crashed Ice track, and other portions of the venue.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Earns Third-Party Certification to SFI on 490,000 Acres of WMA Property

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) has certified approximately 490,000 acres of state-owned wildlife management area (WMA) forestland through the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) 2015-2021 Forest Management Standard. “This is another method whereby LDWF can show that we’re using proper stewardship managing the property entrusted to us by the citizens of Louisiana,’’ LDWF Secretary Jack Montoucet said. “Thanks to the SFI Forest Partners Program, the public can remain confident that our forested WMA land is managed in line with the high standards set by SFI. They can also be assured that these forests will remain healthy and productive for generations to come.’’

The Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) is pleased to announce that Karla Guyn, CEO of Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) has joined the SFI Board of Directors. During her 20-year career, Guyn has established herself as a respected international conservation leader. “We are thrilled to have a conservationist of Karla’s stature on our board. She leads a team of nearly 400 people devoted to conserving wetlands, which are one of the most important ecosystems on the planet,” said Kathy Abusow, President and CEO of SFI Inc.

SFI Hosts Science Conference To Help Measure The Conservation Impact Of Sustainable Forests

The Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) convened researchers, conservationists, academics and government officials from across North America this week for the first full-scale meeting of the SFI Sounding Board to provide guidance for the SFI Conservation Impact Project. This project, launched by SFI in September at the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Conservation Congress, is a large-scale effort to quantify conservation benefits of wellmanaged forests stretching across North America from British Columbia to Florida. Forests certified to the SFI Forest Management Standard cover more than 280 million acres/113 million hectares. Millions more benefit from the SFI Fiber Sourcing Standard.

Habitat for Humanity Is 24-0 at Clemson Homecoming Games

For 24 years, the Clemson University community has come together to build a Habitat for Humanity home for a local family during the 10 days leading up to the homecoming football game. As an orange wave of pride in Clemson Tigers football surged across campus, a new home for a local family came to life on Bowman Field on Saturday. The three-bedroom, two-bathroom, one-story home will be moved to a local neighborhood, where it will be home to Lakeesha Jones and her family.

American Bird Conservancy (ABC) is taking an ecosystem-based approach to bird conservation that is benefitting birds in ways that help other species — including people. In recognition of this work and for partnering with the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) and many others who care about birds, ABC received the SFI President’s Award at the SFI 2016 Annual Conference. Examining the needs of a wide variety of birds helps build understanding of broader ecosystem health as it relates to sustainable forest management — the kind of forest management that also provides wider environmental benefits, like clean water and carbon storage, that support all life.

Central Canada SFI Implementation Committee Grows Partnerships One MOU and Hard Hat Sticker at a Time

Operating across two time zones and two Canadian provinces, with a combined area the size of continental Europe, hasn’t stopped the Central Canada Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) Implementation Committee from setting a new standard for community building, partnerships and member participation. In recognition of this outsized effort, the committee received the SFI Implementation Committee Award at the SFI 2016 Annual Conference.
