Responsible forest management supports harvesting timber, as well as promoting wildlife habitats and animal populations. Managed forests also protect water quality for fish and other freshwater plants and animals while providing recreational opportunities for the public. That’s why the SFI Standard incorporates wildlife habitat protection, support for biodiversity, and water quality protection amongst the many other requirements in the SFI program.
We were delighted that Jonathan Kelley of Presque Isle, Maine captured his first encounter with a calf moose and shared it with us in the 2013 photo contest. New life in a forest – the next chapter is unfolding!
And to ensure this continues for future generations, that’s exactly why in 2010, SFI Inc. first invested $400,000 to create the SFI Conservation and Community Partnerships Grant Program to foster partnerships and conservation research that improve forest management in the United States and Canada, and responsible procurement globally. In a few short years, by leveraging partner contributions, SFI has achieved a total investment of $4.8 million in conservation partnerships and research, supporting more than 40 grants with 150 partners across North America.
